FAQS

What type of Japanese steel are your knives made from?

Our blades are forged from premium Japanese high-carbon steel, chosen for its exceptional sharpness, edge retention, and responsiveness on the board. This type of steel has been used by Japanese blacksmiths for generations and allows for a harder blade than most stainless knives, delivering cleaner cuts and a more precise cooking experience.

What makes your knives different from other Japanese knives?

Virelle knives combine Japanese-forged steel blades with Australian-made handles crafted from post-consumer waste. Each knife is hand-assembled in small batches, creating a balance of traditional performance and modern sustainability. No two handles are the same, making every knife truly one-of-a-kind.

Are your knives made from recycled materials?

Yes. Our handles are made in Australia using post-consumer waste that has been reprocessed into a durable, food-safe material. By using material that already exists, we reduce landfill waste while creating handles designed to last for years of everyday use.

Are your knives suitable for home cooks or professional chefs?

Our knives are designed for both passionate home cooks and professional kitchens. They offer exceptional sharpness and balance without feeling intimidating, making them ideal for anyone who values performance, precision, and beautifully crafted tools in the kitchen.

Where are Virelle knives made?

Our blades are forged in Japan by skilled blacksmiths, then paired with Australian-made handles and hand-assembled in small batches in Sydney. This dual-heritage approach combines Japanese steel expertise with local craftsmanship and sustainable materials.

Can Japanese steel knives rust?

High-carbon Japanese steel can develop surface rust if left wet or exposed to moisture for long periods. This is normal and easily prevented by drying the blade after use. With regular care, the steel will instead form a protective patina that enhances character and longevity.

Are your knives dishwasher safe?

No. We strongly recommend hand-washing only. Dishwashers expose knives to high heat, harsh detergents, and moisture that can damage both the blade and handle. Hand-washing and immediate drying will keep your knife performing and looking its best for years.

How should I care for my Virelle knife?

With a small amount of care and following our care instruction your knife should last a long time.

Hand wash only with mild soap and dry immediately, like immediately, this is vital to minimise signs of rust.

Avoid the dishwasher or soaking in water they will damage the blade. Regular honing will maintain the edge.

Are your knives produced in limited batches?

Yes. All Virelle knives are produced in small batches. Sourcing blades from Japanese blacksmiths and making handles individually limits how many knives we can create at any one time. This approach ensures quality, attention to detail, and that every knife feels considered and purposeful.

Will you restock sold-out knives?

As we're just starting out, each batch is extremely limited and may not return in the same exact form. We're exploring new styles and materials all the time.
